The GelSight elastomer gel pad with a diameter of 2cm is pressed lightly against the surface of the component to be inspected, deforms accordingly and creates a precise positive impression. LEDs integrated in the hand-held device are switched in sequence when the image is captured and illuminate the positive imprint of the test surface from a total of 6 different angles of incidence. The test surface itself is not directly illuminated. A three-dimensional image of the surface is calculated on the basis of colour values, transparencies, reflections and refractions. This representation, reduced to the pure form, enables a very clear surface representation The measuring accuracy is in the range of a few micrometres.
